    VU Connects

    Connecting our education to society

  • Who are we

VU Connects came into existence when a group of VU employees, working in different departments, discovered that they were all focused on a common goal: bridging the gap between society and university education. Surprisingly, none of us had previously heard of each other's initiatives. It turned out that many more VU employees share this objective and recognize the value of involving students in societal engagement. However, it's important to note that adopting this teaching approach can be time-consuming and far from easy. Nevertheless, the benefits for the students are substantial. So, we decided to collaborate and explore ways to support others who are willing to embrace this approach but may lack the necessary time and resources, thus lowering the threshold for teachers. Our aim is not only to make it more accessible but also to establish a community that facilitates connections and collaboration within the VU.

    Why VU Connects

    Engaging students

Developing skills for the common good

We, as a society, are currently facing many pressing social issues and challenges, such as climate change, social inequality and political polarization, to name a few. These issues require informed, engaged, and responsible citizens who can work together in order to find solutions for these challenges. By equipping our students with the knowledge, skills, and values needed to understand and address social issues, the VU is preparing them to be active and responsible citizens who can contribute to the common good.

    Building bridges beyond the classroom

    Breaking boundaries and overcoming challenges

We have noticed that teachers across all faculties are incorporating a form of Engaged Learning into their courses. Many of us recognize the importance of breaking free from the confines of the university and venturing beyond its boundaries. However, this is no easy task and often time-consuming. We believe that by collaborating and connecting with others who share similar interests and values, even more can be achieved. The aim is to reduce the barriers to adopting this educational approach.

    Let's Connect!

    Education with society

Whatever you call your form of education, if you work together with societal partners, we would love to collaborate with you, offer support and most of all facilitate connections! Are you currently collaborating with societal partners in your courses or interested in doing so? If you have any questions, need guidance, or simply want some input, please feel free to contact us.

    Funding

This pilot was funded with the help of the CSL-Broadermind team, allowing us to support the platform throughout 2024. After this period, we will evaluate the platform's value for lecturers at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and decide on the best path forward once the pilot concludes. The feedback from teachers and societal partners is very valuable to us to ensure we meet your needs and continuously improve the platform. Feel free to contact us with any suggestions.
